Unions NSW will be holding a lunchtime Workers Compensation rally outside NSW Parliament on 4 November 2016 at 12:30pm

The rally coincides with public hearings for the first review of the 2012 workers compensation changes.

Unions NSW has made an extensive submission to the Law and Justice Committee painting a horrifying picture of the scale of the devastation wreaked by the changes to workers compensation: from suicides to soup kitchens and everything in between.

At the rally on 4 November 2016 we will be hearing from injured workers and highlighting the harsh impact of the 2012 changes on the injured workers of NSW and their families.

There will also be regional events:

Wollongong - 31 October 2016
Orange - 2 November 2016
Newcastle - 3 November; and
A date for an event in Lismore is being finalised.

By keeping the pressure on the Government about workers comp we have won significant changes including more than doubling the medical cap and reducing the threshold for lifetime cover among other changes. This rally is an important part of our plan to keep winning improvements to the scheme.

The NSW Branch of the ETU/CEP has donated $10,000 towards the fighting fund to support the 55 sacked CUB workers in Melbourne who are members of the ETU and the AMWU.

On top of this NSW construction industry members chipped in a further $2,000 out of their own pocket while an AMWU/ETU fundraiser last Wednesday night saw another $5,000 raised bringing the total to almost $20,000.

ETU Secretary Steve Butler said that the actions of CUB were un-Australian which is a far reach from a company that trades so heavily on what it is to be an Australian.

“As an act of solidarity these funds will be provided to help support the effected workers and assist their campaign for full re-instatement” said NSW Secretary Steve Butler.

“This is what being union is all about, standing united and supporting each other in times of need.”

“I have personally visited the picket line in Melbourne and I have meet these workers and understand what they are going through as a result of this bastard act from their employer.”

“I am proud of our membership in NSW for stepping up to the plate to support our brothers and sisters in Victoria during this dispute.” said Steve.

“I encourage all members, their families and friends to consider supporting other brands when next visiting the local bottle shop.” Steve said

Extreme Heat Forcast for NSW

Weather forecasters are predicting that parts of NSW and the ACT will experience high temperatures over the coming days.

All members must be aware of the dangers of heat stress and familiarise themselves with the unions working in heat policy (2003), your employer’s heat management policy and the WorkCover code of practice for managing the work environment.

In summary ETU members should observe the following as a minimum but individuals should take appropriate action depending on your individual health and work situation:

Member Information Nights

The ETU in partnership with EISSNEW Law and RT Health are hosting a number of member information nights across the state commencing in June.

The first four information evenings will be held in NEWCASTLE, the CENTRAL COAST, SYDNEY and WOLLONGONG with a further eighteen meetings scheduled across the state.

ALL members from all industry sectors are invited to come along and hear from your leadership team about the challenges we face including industrial matters, campaigns and the latest developments in Superannuation.

National Licensing Aborted

COAG have announced that they have officially aborted the National Licensing model covering electrical and other trade based licenses. 

Following the outcome of extensive State-based consultation, the majority of States decided not to pursue the proposed National Occupational Licensing Scheme reform. Most jurisdictions identified a number of concerns with the proposed NOLS model and potential costs. States instead decided to investigate approaches that would increase labour mobility and deliver net benefits for businesses and governments.
 
To this end, States agreed to work together via the Council for the Australian Federation (CAF) to develop alternative options for minimising licensing impediments to improving labour mobility and to manage the orderly disestablishment of the National Occupation Licensing Authority from early 2014.

PWCS workers set to stike

ETU members working for Port Waratah Coal Service are continuing industrial action after negotiations between the company and the union’s single bargaining unit broke down. Made up of the MUA, TWU, ETU, AWU & AMWU the single bargaining unit has been negotiating with the company over a new enterprise agreement.

However PWCS and the unions cannot agree on important employment protections including the use of contractors and the dispute settlement procedure which has led to industrial action. ETU members are set to strike for 24 hours commencing today, Wednesday 29 May commencing at noon.

Meanwhile the international union IndustriALL has sent a letter of support to PWCS union members.

Workers at a Newcastle coal terminal have endorsed ongoing industrial action after striking over what they say is a threat to their work rights. 
  
Over 200 employees of Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) attended a four-hour rally in Newcastle on Wednesday where they unanimously voted for a two-week campaign of protected action.
 
The action will include eight, 12 and 24 hour stoppages as well as bans on overtime and working outside classifications, the unions representing them said in a joint statement.
 
PWCS's current offer removes limits on the use of contractors and gives employees less say over work hours and shifts, The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), Transport Workers Union (TWU), Electrical Trades Union (ETU) and Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) say.
 
Talks between the PWCS and unions will continue next week.
 
Comment was being sought from PWCS, which has previously said it was seeking productivity and flexibility trade-offs against significant pay increases for workers.
 
A MUA spokesman said his members couldn't understand why the relationship with PWCS had soured.
 
"We've enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship for many years," he told AAP.
 
"We just don't understand why after 30 years of a good relationship they've decided to reduce conditions of employment."
 
A PWCS spokesman said the company had not received any immediate notification of pending action.
 
Wednesday's four-hour stop-work caused the company minimal disruption, he said.
